Holiday Cottage sustainability

We are absolutely thrilled to that our cottage has received its Environmental Quality Mark award! It is a wonderful recognition of the efforts we make to tread lightly on this beautiful earth.

As part of our commitment to sustainability, I think a lot about what it truly means to live a "green" life, especially when I'm managing the change over between guests.

While we often look for big solutions, sometimes the most sustainable choice is right under our noses: simply keeping what we already have in good working order.

Today's Small Project: The Plate Rack Revival.
I caught myself eyeing our kitchen drying rack this morning. There was a little spot of rust starting to peek through, and the immediate, modern temptation was to jump online, click 'buy,' and have a shiny, brand-new one delivered by tomorrow. But then I stopped.

Why replace something that still functions perfectly? A bit of elbow grease, some gentle cleaning, and a little care transformed that rack from "looking tired" to "sparkling clean." It’s still sturdy, it does its job perfectly, and most importantly, it isn't heading to a landfill. It may still be less shiny than a brand new one, but hopefully our guests will understand.

Maintaining the things we own is an act of defiance against the "throwaway culture" that has become so common. It saves money, reduces waste, and helps us appreciate the tools we use in our daily lives.

So, here is my challenge to you this week: take a look around your home. Is there something you’ve been thinking of replacing? Could a little bit of maintenance—a polish, a screw tightened, or a good scrub—give it a new lease on life instead?
Small actions, when added up, truly do make a difference. We're proud to be on this journey with you.

Room to play

When we first started offering holiday accommodation back in 2009 we could bet that if there was a family staying the children would be kicking footballs and larking around outside until dark. I  was thinking about this the other day and trying to figure out what has changed, but now we never see kids out on their own. Is it the children or is it the parents? Is it smartphones and addictive games?

We have loads of space for kicking a football or setting up quick cricket etc but the trend is a visit to Alton Towers and Go Ape and the rest of the time glued to a screen. Good times are had by all and I definitely don't mean to be judgemental. In fact I am wondering if we are making it clear enough that this space is there to be enjoyed. In fact, I shall put a football and other games into the cottage and see if that makes a difference.

I will report back. Meanwhile, a picture of the one family since lockdown to set up camp outdoors and play some games.

Single storey, pet friendly holiday cottage

Among the feedback we've received, a significant number of guests have expressed their preference for single storey, ground-floor accommodation. The reasons vary—from the ease of access to the simplicity of having everything on one level, particularly appreciated by those with mobility concerns or families with young children.

We're pleased to confirm that Barks Holiday Cottage fits this bill perfectly. Our cottage is a single storey, bungalow-style accommodation nestled in the heart of the countryside. It combines the accessibility and convenience of bungalow living with the charm and tranquility of a country cottage, making it an ideal choice for anyone seeking a peaceful retreat without the worry of stairs.

Road closures Moneystone - Whiston - Oakamoor

This week an older couple are staying. We spoke on the phone and I explained the road closures and they were confident they understood that the only access to Moneystone is via A52. Unfortunately when they reached the end of Blakely Lane on the A52 there was a road closure sign and they lost confidence and followed the diversion sign. Essentially they then spent about an hour going round in circles.

Blakeley Lane is open as far as Moneystone (1 mile) - holiday cottage guests should take this turning off A52.

Holiday guests need to ignore this sign and continue along Blakeley Lane towards Moneystone.

It would be helpful if this sign made it clear that the road is open as far as Moneystone. Not only would this help our guests have confidence that they can reach the holiday cottage, but it would also prevent all those people who are hopeful that they can get past the road closure and get to Oakamoor (they really, really can not) from going a mile down a country lane only to have to turn around again.

Blakeley Lane from Moneystone towards Oakamoor and Whiston is totally shut; you can't even walk past. My dog is not impressed as his favourite place to take me is for a wander down into the village. I think he was an urban dog in his earlier life so he prefers tarmac to woodland paths and is always in search of signs of human habitation.

Stormy is blind and simply doesn't believe that his favourite walk has a metal fence barring our way.

These road closures are because of water pipe works being undertaken by Severn Trent. They are working very hard in this area. The signs say that this road closure is likely to stay in place until 21st July.

Hottest May Bank Holiday at the Cottage

We wait for months for some gorgeous weather, so when the temperature dial gets turned up to silly, scorching levels it would be wrong to complain in any way. So it is out with the parasols for a bit of shade. The holiday cottage has a very large parasol on the terrace. Not only is it lovely to sit on the bench and listen to the birdsong, it is also great to open it in front of the french windows and enjoy a seamless transition from inside to outside.

Here's a pic of my dear old blind dog checking it is me coming back to share the bench in our garden. Hot day for dogs, we had a lovely time in our bit of shade.

Dog royalty at Barks Cottage

We had the great privelege of rolling out the red carpet for hound royalty King Penda and Sable. They brought their devoted handler along to attend to their every need. Crufts and Barks Holiday Cottage now have something in common: King Penda has enjoyed a winning experience at both.

Pets are welcome at Barks Holiday Cottage and you don't have to be dog royalty, but it does guarantee a lot of fuss and posing for the camera opportunities if you are.

Dog-sitting for guests visiting Alton Towers

We were delighted to be able to help a family visiting from Scotland with some dog sitting so that they could enjoy a splendid day at Alton Towers. Just look at these two lovely ones! They were a joy to take out on a little lead walkies in the field and were very smiley for us when we went into the cottage to get them.

The owners very sweetly asked if it was £10 per dog, but we reassured them that it was hard enough asking for extra cash as it was, so £10 for each dog sitting day was plenty. When we went in to the cottage after the guest family had left to return to Scotland, we were surprised to discover the flowers and card from the lovely doggos.

Embracing the Sunshine and of May at Barks Holiday Cottage

On a radiant day like today, it's tempting to set aside every chore and just bask in the sunshine that graces our beautiful Peak District countryside. Our holiday cottage guests seem to have the right idea, taking full advantage of the weather to explore the area with their furry friend in tow. Opting for a smart, last-minute self-catering holiday cottage booking, they're making the most of their weekend, with plans to visit the splendid Trentham Gardens and the majestic Chatsworth House before their departure tomorrow.

While the lure of a leisurely day is strong, duty calls for me as we prepare for the next changeover at Barks Holiday Cottage. Ensuring everything is perfect for our incoming guests is top priority, even on such a glorious day. However, I couldn't resist the allure of the field at Barks, if only for a moment, and was rewarded with the bees visiting the broom flowers in the new shrubbery.

Capturing this busy little visitor on camera was a gentle reminder that we all have our tasks to get on with, no matter how sunny the day.

So, as our current weekend guests relish the beauty and tranquility of the Peak District, and the bees continue their important work among the flowers, I shall dive back into my own work. After all, the effort of preparing our cottage for the next family or couple is pretty satisfying.

For those contemplating a last-minute getaway, consider Barks Holiday Cottage. Here, you can enjoy the freedom of a self-catering holiday, explore famous local attractions, and perhaps even capture your own special moments of nature's wonders, just as I did today.

Booking direct for your next quick trip to Alton Towers

This year is starting a little slowly for us at Barks Holiday Cottage, but that's fine because our short breaks are often an 'extra holiday', or a 'quick trip to Alton Towers'. So far there is a change in how our guests are choosing to book their stays with us. We've noticed a pleasing trend: more first time visitors are booking directly with us, bypassing our booking agents. It's pleasing because it's a win-win situation—better for us and better for our guests, ensuring a personal touch from the very first moment.

Direct Booking Advantages:

Booking directly not only offers a more personal experience but also provides the best value for our guests. It's an opportunity for us to understand your needs directly and tailor your stay to your preferences, ensuring that your holiday is as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. We do use booking agents Sykes Cottages, but since you have found us here we invite you to continue booking direct with us, the owners.

But is there a Direct Booking Discount?

Hmm, hold a minute, that's too direct a question, making me feel like a politician being put on the spot by a journalist. So look (as politicians always seem to say when on the radio) ...we support our booking agents in everything they do for us and are advertising the same prices as them 😇. Are you now like me, after whatever that politician just said, muttering to myself that they haven't actually answered the question. Which always makes me come to a whole unsaid conclusion 😂😁

So ... if you would like to contact us and check the availability on your preferred dates, we will do our best to make sure you get the best service by booking direct.

Why not come and enjoy the bluebells? They are plentiful and beginning to look superb.

Holiday cottage: nearby restaurant and bar at Whiston Hall

Don't switch off by the mention of golf, really this post is about a fabulous local bar and restaurant, within walking distance.

Yesterday I played a golf match at Whiston Hall. There were 14 players a side followed by a buffet. My team, Denstone, was narrowly beaten but the amazing hospitality at Whiston made up for it.  So while I was busy tucking into a delicious buffet, I asked for a menu to put into the holiday cottage.

Whiston Hall is a 9 hole golf course, wedding venue and bar/restaurant. It is also within walking distance of Barks Holiday Cottage. It's a decent walk, a regular route across the fields that I take with my dog, which makes a very pleasant early evening stroll to take in the sunset, glass of wine in hand. There are outdoor tables and a very pleasant bar with a spectacular view.

For those that would enjoy the golf opportunity, Whiston can be booked to pay and play. Not sure if it is £15 or £20 per 18 holes, but it is that sort of fee. It is 9 holes with two different tees to make each 9 a bit different. The slope rating suggests it is easy, and whilst I agree it is not long, I really don't think it is that easy. Anyway, it is worth a visit if you like a knock. And the views are stunning, even if your golf isn't!

Evening Serenity: A Toast to Tranquility at Barks Holiday Cottage

On my return from my pilates class I witnessed a moment that beautifully encapsulates the essence of a stay at Barks Holiday Cottage. It's these snapshots of tranquility and joy that remind us why we cherish this place so much.

This evening at 7:45pm on a breezy Peak District evening after a rainy day, there was a lovely scene unfolding on the terrace of Barks Holiday Cottage. Seated snugly and comfortably, enjoying a quiet moment, were the loving owners of little Lundy, a gorgeous dog who has become something of a regular here. With the children tucked up in bed, it was time for some peace and quiet in the fresh air. And fresh it was, to be honest, but great to be outside on a rain-free evening.

Little Lundy from London - a city dweller with a country heart - has found his second home here, basking on the terrace. His presence adds a special touch to the cottage's atmosphere, embodying the pet-friendly promise that makes Barks Holiday Cottage a favourite with families and their doggos.

Whether it's a peaceful morning with a cup of coffee in the early sun or a quiet evening with a glass of wine as the stars begin to twinkle, these moments of solitude and togetherness are what life at the holiday cottage is all about.
We've come to realise that Barks Holiday Cottage is a place where families come to reconnect and enjoy days of excitement and evenings of calm - and where good dogs like Lundy can walk with joy in their hearts.

So, if you're yearning for a retreat from the hustle and bustle, a place where you can unwind on a terrace on a breezy evening while the children dream peacefully, look no further. Barks Holiday Cottage awaits, ready to welcome you to your home away from home, where peace, quiet, and the making of warm memories.

About the holiday cottage:

Barks holiday sleeps 5 in two bedrooms. Pets welcome. Very rural location. 3 miles from Alton Towers, but in the heart of the countryside. email: BarksHC@gmail.com

A Tribute to little Pickle Valentine: Snowdrops in our little Nature Reserve

In the land surrounding Barks Holiday Cottage's we have created a little nature reserve. At this time of year the snowdrops begins to emerge, heralding the early whispers of spring. This enchanting display is not just a natural spectacle; it's a tribute to a little soul that left paw prints on our hearts. Pickle Valentine, a beloved companion and a friend to many of our guests, found her final resting place among the tranquility of our nature reserve. Born on Valentine's Day, our little white terrier's spirit is commemorated with the blossoming of snowdrops around her birthday, transforming the area into a living memorial.

The snowdrops at Barks Cottage are more than just flowers; they symbolize renewal, resilience, and the enduring love between humans and their furry companions. Many of our holiday cottage guests bring their four-legged companions, so will totally understand. February is normally a quiet time at the holiday cottage, but anyone booking for some winter walking is invited to wander through this special part of our grounds, where each snowdrop serves as a reminder of Pickle's gentle spirit and the joy she brought to all who knew her.

Our little nature reserve, one of our commitments to conservation, offers guests a moment of reflection and connection with nature's delicate beauty. As these snowdrops bloom, we remember the joy that Pickle brought to our lives and the beauty of life cycles in nature.

Join us this season to experience the serene beauty of our snowdrop garden, a heartfelt tribute in the midst of our little sanctuary. It's a place where memories bloom as brightly as the flowers, and where the spirit of Pickle Valentine lives on in every delicate petal.

Last minute or plan ahead?

I am naturally a last minute sort of person. Essays at uni and report deadlines for work only received the attention they deserved a day or two before the deadline. But some decades on, and last minute travel plans are causing me a bit more stress than they used to. I have been persuaded by dear son to jet off to the Alps before Christmas, leaving other half in charge of dog, Christmas card writing and holiday cottage. Are you thinking it's a lot of effort to go to in a bid to get out of writing Xmas cards? I feel a bit guilty because I am pretty certain that the personal messages won't be included in the cards this year.

Anyway, for those of you who prefer to plan ahead, we are now taking 2024 bookings for the holiday cottage. We are in the midst of changing booking agents, so it may look like all dates in the summer are blocked off - but rest assured, direct bookings can still be made. Just drop us an email.
